How To Cancel Council Tax UK (4 Easy Steps)

Council Tax is a compulsory fee in the UK which is billed monthly or yearly. It is your responsibility to ensure this is paid and kept on top of if you move property.

Council Tax rates will differ between local authorities and there are situations where you may be entitled to a discount (such as if you’re a student).

If you move home, remember to make sure your account is closed to avoid future payments.

To cancel your Council Tax, follow these instructions:

  1. If you pay by direct debit or standing order, log onto your internet banking and locate your payment
  2. Select the option to cancel
  3. Check your bill or local authority website for contact details of the Council Tax team
  4. Inform them of your reason for cancelling

Remember, only cancelling your direct debit will not necessarily stop payments from being taken.

A direct debit is an agreement between you and the payee so you will need to inform them of any changes to avoid incurring unwanted charges.
